The Camberley and Bagshot Association of Metal Detectorists Club was formed back in 1986 by John Young, the first chairman of the club. His aim was to bring together like-minded people in an effort to promote and enjoy the hobby. He also wanted to develop co-operation and trust with local archaeologists, where it could offer mutual benefit. Appropriately, Geoff Coles, Director of the Surrey Heath Group of the Surrey Archaeological Society, attended the formation meeting.
The club has gone from strength to strength, mainly due to the past chairman Jim Murphy, who devoted much of his time to ensure the club ran smoothly. The current chairman is Tony Ward. The club has a limit of 40 members (now fully subscribed) who come from Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
These friendly meetings are always well attended and, occasionally, we have guests to give talks on various detecting topics. Finds of the month are displayed during the break and the best coin and artefact are selected by vote and a certificate is awarded to the winners. A raffle is also held during the break.
Digs are held on Sundays regularly throughout the year on local farms. The club also supports two local charities, where regular annual donations are made to support these needy causes.
Children must be 16 years or over to become a member of the club. The membership waiting list is currently full, so at the moment we are not accepting any more applications for membership.
